Blogging at 32,000 feet

Interior of Airbus 340-600

Connexxion HotspotSo, I’m writing this post at 32,000 feet, aboard a Lufthansa A340, accessing gulker.com’s WordPress blogging server via Boeing’s inflight Connexion Ku-band satellite Internet access service. Just for fun, I snapped a couple of pix of the very nice A340 cabin and the Hotspot sign, and uploaded them via the Connexion satellite link.

This is my first ride on an A340, and I have the good fortune to be in business class. The plane looks new, has amazing amenities – motorized Recaro seats, video-on-demand (more than a dozen movies from a console running Windows CE) and windows in the bathrooms, of all things. The bathrooms in the economy cabin are downstairs in the hold, eliminating the annoyance of jammed aisles near the conveniences.

It’s a pity that Boeing has announced it’s folding Connexion: I’m wading through a couple hundred emails that backed up over the last 24 unconnected hours and am finishing some research while on this 11-hour flight. I should be caught up by the time we land in San Francisco. Curiously, the broadband connection in my hotel room (at the otherwise very nice Dorint Sofitel in Munich) didn’t work last night, but here I am high above (now) the Norwegian Sea, connected at (I’m guessing) about 128K. I’ve been reading spouse Linda’s blog (‘bicontinental Blush, featuring pix from the Bay Area and Europe) and exchanging email with her. It’s about 7:00 PM German time – 10 AM in San Francisco, as I finish this post. I’ll be in the air for another 8 hours or so… send email to gulker at mac dot com if it would amuse you to send some high altitude packets my way…

Hard to resist trying Connexion – a Boeing service on an AirBus product. What’s are the fees? Happy landings . . .

Chris, you are too funny! Hope you get this somewhere over the Arctic circle.
They serve champagne in business class don’t they?

Thanks, Greg, and yes, Raleigh they are serving a rather nice German sparkling wine. Not technically champagne, but close…
