Yes, there is cheer at

Zolo Zippy Buggy cropWe had our holiday crab dinner this evening, a tradition started by Linda’s parents years ago, to celebrate the December birthdays of Linda and John (only 3 days apart). Friends Cathy and Mike joined the soiree with Linda, stepson John, and daughter-in-law Julie. John came early and put the Christmas lights on the house while Linda and Julie shopped.

Like all big nights, much needed doing, flowers and china, stemware and placemats, food prep (cracked crab from Cook’s, soup dropped off by Polly, a woman from church, torn red leaf lettuce, beats, chilled steamed baby green beans, grape tomatoes, Union Square cafe vinaigrette) demanded attention in their turn. Holiday clothes came home from Stanford shopping center, and were inspected and admired. The Christmas lights blew and lithe, dextrous Julie manhandled a ladder into place and changed a fuse in the rain, on the roof, in the dark. Somehow it all came together.

Despite the less than upbeat news Friday, this family and our close friends pulled together: we had a wonderful night, and while we didn’t ignore the cancer we kind of sailed along past it, laughing, gossiping, telling tales on one another.

The toy pictured here, a Zolo Zippy Buggy, is the icon of the evening: goofy and fun, bright and cheerful. Zolo Zippy Buggy was in the store at MOMA where John and I went last night to see the current Tina Modotti/Edward Weston exhibit (recommended). John looked at me and said ‘Gotta have it for mom’s birthday dinner.’ Linda’s nickname is bugs: there’s a long history of, um, bug-themed ‘friends’ coming home… Zolo Zippy Buggy is destined for Linda’s desk at Antics Online, the agency where she works…

Bugs in computer-dom? Must be invasive species . . .

Many, many bugs in computerland. Hard to tell what’s a bug, and what’s a ‘feature’…

. . . and what features bugs . . . or do we know that already?
