Old stones

st_andre_towerSo, we’re sitting on the porch of our rented house, banging on the (mostly) complete keyboard of an ancient Mac laptop, looking at the tower of St. Andre, a 12th century Roman church across the street. I’m nipping at what’s left of the wine I’m using in a pot of boeuf Bourguignon. Life is good.

Linda and I had been sitting on the bench in the church’s tiny garden, until a tour bus from Beaujolais pulled up, disgorging enough Roman art enthusiasts to approximately double the population of Ameugny for the duration. One woman apologized to us for blocking the view with the bus.

We walked back to the house as the mob climbed atop dry stone walls that were hand set probably centuries, if not a millennium ago. When you live amidst lots of very old things, perhaps they don’t seem so precious. I am disinclined to do anything more than look at those stones and wonder who put them there so carefully that I’m enjoying them today…
